the project highway 202 to karatsu was born in the summer of 2015 during my artist residency at studio kura in itoshima, japan. studio kura is located in the japanese country side, where the highway 202 to karatsu is all that divides the studio from the rice fields and the supreme darkness that falls over the area at night. during the night, cars and trucks drive through the small farming communities without stopping, thus providing an excellent lighting source in the darkness. the series is not only a portrait of the hardworking farmers, who, despite their anonymity, are ever present in the vast landscape, but also of the silence and life just beyond the 202. lastly, the series is a personal face off with being alone in the dark in a place, where my loneliness is palpable and nobody can hear me scream.
